WEMT 39 is a Fox affiliated Tri Cities television station licensed to Northeastern Tennessee, Southwestern Virginia and Greenville, Tennessee. WEMT broadcasts on virtual channel PSIP 39, and UHF channel 38. The transmission is transferred from Camp Creek Bald on the Tennessee and North Carolina border on Viking Mountain, Greenville Tennessee. WEMT 39 can be seen on Charter channel 10 and Comcast channel 9. Viewers will find high definition on digital channels in both Charter and Comcast at 710 and 434 respectively.
Esteem Broadcasting owns WEMT 39, while Bonten Media group operates it through LMA (local marketing agreement). This makes WEMT an NBC affiliate sister, and both share studios in Bristol, Virginia. Syndicated programming on WEMT includes Family Guy, How I Met Your Mother, Judge Joe Brown and Don’t Forget the Lyrics.
WEMT 39 began operations in November 1985 and was originally known as WETO-TV and owned by East Tennessee Own Inc. WEMT was one of the first independent televisions in Tennessee. Prior to signing on, the channel was an ABC affiliate and provided its audiences with general entertainment consisting of sitcoms, cartoons, religious programming and old movies. In 1987, TVX Broadcast Group bought WETO and became a Fox affiliate on 3rd May. And in May 1988 it changed from WETO to WEMT. The name change resulted in MT Communications buying WETO.
In September 2005, the only prime-time news was broadcast by WCYB on WEMT at a shared studio. This newscast was known as Fox Tri-Cities – 10 O’clock News. The news slot was seen for thirty minutes every night. However, the news expanded from 11th Sept 2006, to a one hour long format. The newscast began using red and blue color graphics and the station renamed its segment on weather forecast and modified several other elements to distinguish it from WCYB. Paul Johnson a former Sport Director began regularly appearing as sports anchor and weeknight news on WEMT. On 17th June, 2010, WEMT 39 began to air local news, and became the first in the area to feature news in high definition. Other WEMT shows were also upgraded.
