Glee music has been a success commercially, with nearly 21 million single sales and 9 million album sales. Glee has also been nominated for 19 Emmy Awards, 4 Golden Globe Awards and 6 Satellite Awards. Wins include Best Television Series in 2010 at the Golden Globe Awards as well as in 2011. Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch won Best Supporting Actor and Actress respectively. Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison also received nominations at the Golden Globes for Best Actress and Actor.
Glee was conceived by Ian Brennan, based on his personal experience as a member of the show choir at Prospect High School in Illinois. His initial vision was a film, rather than a television series. However, after completing the first draft in 2005, he could not generate enthusiasm for the project. A friend of Brennan, Mike Novik passed on the script to Ryan Murphy who had himself taken part in a show choir and could relate to Brennan’s story. Murphy and Brad Falchuk felt that Glee would do better as a television musical comedy, which Fox picked up within 15 hours of it being entirely rewritten.
